What Is a Travel ID?

If you plan to fly domestically, the answer is yes. The REAL ID Act was enacted by Congress and it set unique measures for the issuance of driver’s licenses and state-issued ID cards.
To board a domestic flight, you will need an ID that meets the requirements of the REAL ID Act. A driver’s license or state-issued ID card from a compliant state will work.
Can I Still Use My Current License to Board an Airplane?
The act set benchmarks for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and required them to be more tamper-resistant and to include security features such as a digital photograph. The act also created a deadline for states to comply with the new standards.
Originally, that deadline was January 1, 2008. However, it has been pushed back several times, and the current deadline is May 2025. This means that if your state is not compliant with the REAL ID Act by that date, you will need an alternative form of ID such as a passport to board a domestic flight.
Fortunately, many states are already compliant with the REAL ID Act, so the extended majority of Americans will not be impacted by this change. However, if your state is currently non-compliant, you should start making plans now to get an alternative form of ID. Otherwise, you may find yourself grounded come May 2025.
What Are the Arizona Travel ID Requirements?
The requirements for an Arizona travel ID are the same as the requirements for any other state-issued ID. Let’s look at them in more detail:
- You must show proof of legal presence. ie birth certificate, permanent resident card, employment card
- You must have a Social Security number
- You must have two forms of documentation that show your Arizona address such as a utility bill or bank statement
- You will need to provide proof of your name change if it is different from the name on your proof of identity documents
